GWiTA Jordan Senior women in tech training

GWiTA Jordan held its first series of 6 training sessions between the 20th October to the 4th November, in Amman. The training, with 10 ladies in their “golden age” (60+) and 10 Ambassadors, introduced communication on the internet to women who had never properly used the internet previously.
The training was mostly about basic use of computers and the internet, which is extremely useful to have knowledge of today. The most important obstacle that the training aimed to overcome is the mystery of technology for many older people, which is the number one factor that has stopped the women from learning in the first place.
The event was set up to create a comfortable learning environment for the ladies, with a tutor for every two participants, and small competitions between them.
This event was mostly described as very fun and interesting by the participants. Thanks to the team of GWiTA Jordan and special thanks to Mr.Ayad Abbas which helped and guided the team throughout the training.

GWiTA Doha, Qatar Launching Event

GWiTA Doha held its first event in Doha, with a vision of connecting and encouraging women in the field of technology and Internet.  GWiTA Doha officially launched on 16 October, and partnered with women leaders from @DohaTweetUps, a leading online community brining online ideas to offline events in Doha.

At the kickoff event, 20 women (university students and working professionals) shared their interests in technology and exchanged ideas on GWiT and future events.  The highlight of the event was the speaker session, featuring Nina Curley, Editor-in-Chief from @WamdaME.

Nina shared her views on online presences as individuals and entrepreneurship in the Middle East. Nina suggested that each woman should align her online presence to a brand she wants to be perceived.  In an era of social media, every woman should also be aware of privacy rights provided by each social tool – sharing content only with intended audience and googling your name to protect your online reputation.

Nina also encourages women, who want to pursue a journalism career covering technology, to get involved with startup communities in the Middle East and up-to-date with technology trends.  As Nina mentioned, traditional career paths may no longer apply to today’s job market, and if you are passionate about something, “Just do it!”

The G(irls)20 Summit: Connecting Women Globally

by Molly Larrison

The G(irls)20 summit is a Google funded global symposium for girls 18-20, with a representative from each G20 nation, with a mission to advance the full participation of girls and women globally through their economic and political empowerment. The annual event takes place three weeks before the G20 summit, and addresses cultural, political and economic issues that reside close to home and heart, for these girls.

Annually, Googlers from around the globe volunteer to mentor G(irls)20 Ambassadors, sharing ideas, creativity, energy and experience, as they (the Ambassadors) begin a journey of empowering girls into women of significant leadership. Just before the applications were due for the G(20)irls 2013 summit this year, Googlers mentored 38 selected delegates from 21 countries that ranged from Turkey, US, Mexico, Russia and Kenya, to name a few. I was paired up with a South African delegate, Thato Mokoena.

Thato Mokoena shared her proposal with me titled “Presidential Girl, empowering the next generation of women leaders”, co-authored with Veronica Cho, South Korean delegate. In this proposal they aim to politically engage adolescent girls, resulting in economic successes in the local communities. The proposal also suggests structuring an environment for women to thrive through girls’ club, parliament and mentorships.

A quote by Congresswomen Betty McCollum inspired Thato to recognize the challenges girls face in developing areas, and motivate us to support the action.

“Every girl deserves to have her voice heard and the realities of her life understood because for too long girls have been forced to be silent, invisible and subordinate. Now is the time for these creative, smart, beautiful voices to tell the world how they feel and what they think. And, I want to hear what’s on their minds.”
-- Congresswoman Betty McCollum, U.S. House of Representatives

The proposal goes on to indicate that there are three components to building the environment appropriate to foster girls into leaders: Parliament, clubs and mentorships. Parliament provides a ‘forum’ where girls can learn how to become leaders and practice these skills. Parliament is also ‘an environment’ which fosters growth and enables a dialogue for positive solutions that will impact each community. The completion of parliamentary session and workshops may result in ‘micro-grants’, allowing for implementation of the ideas and design. The result is two-fold. These girls will experience growth and gain confidence to move on and mentor others. The community also reaps the benefits of the project’s rewards.

Thato’s proposal acts as a solid reminder of how the planet’s hopeful youth imagines a better, more evolved world. Their passion of thought & idea exists from what is true in the heart and mind. This vision is proposed in an 8 page document describing how their leadership can help change the world. For more information on the The G(irls)20 Summit, please visit the website here.

First “Women in Technology” Workshop kicks off in Egypt

g|egypt 2.0

Working 12 hour days, managing a career and a family, exploring the possibility of starting a business... these were just some of the issues discussed at the “Women In Technology” (WIT) Session, held on day two of g|egypt 2.0. By invitation only, an intimate group of 45 women were selected to participate in workshops on the business benefits of the internet, and social media, with a special focus on Google+, YouTube & AdWords.
From students and recent graduates, to entrepreneurs and IT professionals, the attendees discussed the challenges of achieving success, and listened to a panel of experts which featured Hanan Abdel Maguid, CEO of OT Ventures as the guest speaker.
One significant aspect of the workshop was the desire of participants to discuss the challenges an Egyptian woman faces on the path to success, and the fact that women may choose personal commitments or face challenges that can ostensibly inhibit their career opportunities.  But today the internet is a net economic enabler for women.  In today’s digital world, a woman no longer has to make a choice between having a career or exploring a business opportunity and being a stay-at-home-mom.
At the end of the workshop, participants were invited to showcase their team projects, and what they learned during the session. In addition to the opportunity to network with a group of smart, like-minded women and learning about free online tools at their disposal which empower them to do a better job on their own (e.g. easy-to-use YouTube animation/movie creation tools that allows content creation without the usual time and resource constraints); participating women loved the idea of building a Women in Technology network that will hold regular get-togethers and create, develop and maintain projects in several areas of interest!
But for us Googlers, one of the most wonderful takeaways from the session was the feeling that we were able to help inspire hope through free, friendly Google technology tools which can help empower our users to positively contribute to their societies in the business, social, and cultural spheres!
Women in Technology was founded by a group of female Google employees from various departments, who use their 20% time to connect, empower and inspire women in technology. Their initiatives aim to practically remove the perception that technology is a barrier between women and their dreams, in order to help them realise their potential. Members of the group who attended the session last week included: Shaden Mohamed, Nashwa Aly, Noha Salem, Salma Mohamed, and Rana Kortam.
