g|egypt 2.0

Working 12 hour days, managing a career and a family, exploring the possibility of starting a business... these were just some of the issues discussed at the “Women In Technology” (WIT) Session, held on day two of g|egypt 2.0. By invitation only, an intimate group of 45 women were selected to participate in workshops on the business benefits of the internet, and social media, with a special focus on Google+, YouTube & AdWords.
From students and recent graduates, to entrepreneurs and IT professionals, the attendees discussed the challenges of achieving success, and listened to a panel of experts which featured Hanan Abdel Maguid, CEO of OT Ventures as the guest speaker.
One significant aspect of the workshop was the desire of participants to discuss the challenges an Egyptian woman faces on the path to success, and the fact that women may choose personal commitments or face challenges that can ostensibly inhibit their career opportunities.  But today the internet is a net economic enabler for women.  In today’s digital world, a woman no longer has to make a choice between having a career or exploring a business opportunity and being a stay-at-home-mom.
At the end of the workshop, participants were invited to showcase their team projects, and what they learned during the session. In addition to the opportunity to network with a group of smart, like-minded women and learning about free online tools at their disposal which empower them to do a better job on their own (e.g. easy-to-use YouTube animation/movie creation tools that allows content creation without the usual time and resource constraints); participating women loved the idea of building a Women in Technology network that will hold regular get-togethers and create, develop and maintain projects in several areas of interest!
But for us Googlers, one of the most wonderful takeaways from the session was the feeling that we were able to help inspire hope through free, friendly Google technology tools which can help empower our users to positively contribute to their societies in the business, social, and cultural spheres!
Women in Technology was founded by a group of female Google employees from various departments, who use their 20% time to connect, empower and inspire women in technology. Their initiatives aim to practically remove the perception that technology is a barrier between women and their dreams, in order to help them realise their potential. Members of the group who attended the session last week included: Shaden Mohamed, Nashwa Aly, Noha Salem, Salma Mohamed, and Rana Kortam.
